South Wales Art Society

About us

The aims of the South Wales Art Society are to encourage and advance art in South Wales by the promotion of demonstrations, talks, classes, workshops, critiques, gallery visits and exhibitions.

The Society has a membership of both amateur and professional artists and others who simply enjoy art. The artists among us work in a wide range of media, including watercolour, oil, pastel, acrylic and sculpture. Interests range from traditional imagery to abstract and computer artwork.

Several of our members have exhibited with various London societies such as the summer exhibition at The Royal Academy, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and The Royal Society of Marine Painters.

SWAS first came into existence in 1887 and you can read about our foundation on the Our History page. Thank you to all those past and present members who have loyally supported the Society for many years and helped it to become the vibrant body it is today. An especial welcome to new members who have recently joined and those we hope will join this year. We look forward to an exciting future.

During its existence, the Society has achieved a lot, not only in sustaining its core aims of encouraging and advancing art in South Wales, but also embracing change and opportunities to expand and invigorate its activities. We hope that our website will testify to this.

Meetings are held fortnightly on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm at the Heath Citizens Community Centre in Cardiff. For further information about these activities see the "What's On" section. The Society welcomes new members – please see the Membership page for full details and to download an application form. Please click here for our ‘Latest News’ section.

On this site, members can also include notices about relevant events and exhibitions they think will interest their fellow members. The Gallery pages contain images of our members’ richly diverse artwork and prizewinning entries in our annual and other exhibitions. We also hold an annual competition and also a competition for the Derrick Turner Trophy - details here.

The Society is governed by a Constitution and managed by a Committee whose members are elected at our AGM each year. We welcome comments and ideas – please go to the Contact Us web page to email the Committee. We would be especially pleased to hear from any member who is interested in joining the Committee. A copy of the Constitution is supplied to all members on joining the Society.

You will also find on the Contacts page, details of, and links to, members’ own websites.
